At PenguinCube, we always strived to be a design studio that did things differently - including whimsical traditions that strengthened bonds with clients and suppliers. Among these with the tradition of an annual Promotional item (Pi) that shifted away from the corporate staple of branded office supplies and agendas. With our Pis, we tried to innovate with what we called "year-long conversational pieces" visible on the desks of our clients.
PiFive, PenguinCube's fifth promotional item, was an animation in a box. The animation frames would unlock on a 12hr cycle - so every day, two new frames would be added. Meaning the whole animation could not be viewed until the whole year had elapsed.
The narrative events were conceived by the PenguinCube team using a "cadavre exquis" (exquisite corpse) exercise. The story was then adapted to a low-res pixel art animation.
